Pacing

In Australia, and many other countries, junior riders are restricted in the gearing they are allowed to use.  In Australia at the time of writing, for under 15's the maximum allowed gearing is 6m rollout, which is about a 76" gear.  It's tiny.  This has profound effects on flying 200's.

Here's some data from the 2013-2014 Australian Junior Track Titles at the Dunc Grey velodrome in Sydney (venue for Sydney 2000 Olympic Games) under 15's flying 200's to make a point.

The data tells us a lot about the pacing of these efforts. In particular, pay attention to the "entry" speed, which is the 50 metres preceeding the flying 200 start line, then compare that to the speed for the first 100 metres.  If the entry speed is greater than the first 100, a pacing error has taken place.  The rider was fastest during part of the event that counts for nothing.  A flying 200's on a 6m rollout is 38 revolutions, start too early and the rider runs out of revs.  The line ridden and the jump point for a J15 is quite different to that used by a rider on a larger gear.  The same applies to under 13's and under 11's if they get onto a banked velodrome.  A considerable number of the juniors who the data above was taken from paced their flying 200's poorly and could have recorded better times had they jumped later and been slower during their wind ups.  Many of them recorded their fastest splits for the entry 50.  Coaches of these athletes need to take note of this data and work on the lines ridden and pacing used by these junior sprinters.

The data displayed above is from this spreadsheet.
