Basic skills
The first thing a new sprinter needs is a toolkit of fundamental skills. The most basic skills are :
- Must be comfortable riding the track at low and high speeds
- Riding the track whilst watching your opponent at low and race speeds
These basic skills are easy to develop with practice. A number of drills to practice and hone them are described in this chapter.
Once these two basics are under control, more skills can be practiced to make up a toolkit of moves and counter-moves which collectively are called "tactics". The use of moves at appropriate times is learned by practice and observation. Rehearse the moves in training so that on race day, they're as unconscious as changing gears in a manual car is once that skill is learned.
